The works of Shakespeare have inspired more operatic adaptations than any other writer’s. Simon Keenlyside and Natalie Dessay bring their extraordinary acting and singing skills to two of the Bard’s most unforgettable characters in this new production of Ambroise Thomas’s Hamlet. For the role of Ophelia, the French composer created an extended mad scene that is among the greatest in opera.

April 2010 Gallery Exhibition: Pretty. Ugly. In April, Atelier 6000 offers an ugly little show. Four local artists, Patty Freeman-Martin, Lloyd McMullen, Louise Montgomery, and Denise Rowcraft explore art and beauty among the detritus, physical and metaphysical, which is all around them.
This exhibit features paintings, drawings, hand-pulled prints, mixed media assemblage sculptures, and jewelry created from a strange and sometimes troubling array of disparate objects such as broken Barbie dolls, candy heart boxes, rusting metal and broken glass.Throwing used and discarded cultural icons into the mix of raw materials helps to broaden the questions implied by the show’s title. The viewer is invited to weigh in: from creation to interpretation the subjective nature of beauty and art are open to discussion. What is pretty? What is ugly?
