Obsidian Prize: Deadline April 12
Through a literary prize, High Desert Journal aims to explore the realm described by poet Jarold Ramsey: "I believe in an ecology of story, memory and imagination as much as an ecology of land." As an organization focused on a specific place, we at High Desert Journal have discovered that a deep hunger of readers, writers, and artists exists for place-based arts and literature. We believe every place has an ecology of story, memory, and imagination that inspires us, connects us to one another and to a place. We want to offer the best of this "ecology" through the Obsidian Prize.

Submissions

High Desert Journal is a forum for literary, visual and journalistic artists to contribute a deeper understanding of the landscape and people of the interior West. We accept poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, memoirs, books reviews, essays, interviews and visual arts. High Desert Journal is looking for quality work that illuminates the landscape of the interior West, the people and the relationships between the two. We accept work from residents of the interior West working with any theme, and from anyone living outside of this region creating with an element or theme of the interior West.

We publish biannually (in October and April) and review submissions year round. Please send queries for book reviews. You may submit up to three poems; a maximum of 5,000 words of fiction and nonfiction; up to 3,000 words of interview, memoir and essays, and up to five slides or digital images of artwork. If any work exceeds or does not fit our mission, we will disregard your submission. Submit through SubmishMash.

Through literature and visual arts, High Desert Journal is dedicated to increasing awareness and appreciation of the landscape, people and issues of the interior West.

High Desert Journal publishes a fifty-four page magazine and website brimming with quality fiction, nonfiction, poetry, interviews and book reviews produced by writers living in the interior West or by writers outside the region writing about the interior West.  It also features visual artists who focus on this same region – photographers, painters and sculptors who layer their images over the landscape that inspires them.

Published twice a year, High Desert Journal invites submissions of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, memoirs, interviews, essays, book reviews, letters to the editor and visual art. It accepts work from residents of the region working with any theme and from anyone living outside the region creating work with high desert themes and elements.
