TheDecemberists.jpgHailing from Montana, Colin Meloy arrived in Portland at the turn of the century to a burgeoning music scene. Out of every corner of the city all styles of music was pouring out. Meloy soon joined up with Nate Query, Jenny Conlee, and Chris Funk forming the core of The Decemberists. Witty, intellectual singer songwriter tales were melded to influences as varying as The Smiths, REM, XTC plus British and Irish folk music. In January 2011, they topped the charts with their sixth full length release The King is Dead.

rodrigo-y-gabriela.jpgRodrigo y Gabriela specializes in playing fast, rhythmic acoustic guitars. The duo's members are Rodrigo Sanchez, lead guitar, and Gabriela Quintero, rhythm guitar. The duo met in Mexico City while playing in a thrash metal band Tierra Ácida. They moved to Europe where they met considerable acclaim and gained a reputation by playing in the pubs and bars of Dublin. They received their break when Damien Rice approached them to provide the support for the Irish music festival Oxegen. The duo has released six albums. The self-titled album, Rodrigo y Gabriela was released internationally in 2006, includes covers of Led Zepellin’s Stairway to Heaven and Metallica’s Orion. The duo list Metallica alongside other heavy metal bands as key influences. In January 2011, Rodrigo y Gabriela entered the studio to write and record sessions of the score from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
