The Outlaw Roadshow Summer 2012 Tour featuring Counting Crows and specials guests
The bands picked for The Outlaw Roadshow sprung from music blogger Ryan Spaulding of Ryan's Smashing Life and Adam Duritz of Counting Crows who are true believers in the future of indie music. Adam and Ryan created an event at SXSW where music fans come for the show, stay for the music, and leave with the echoes of new favorite bands ringing in their ears.
The Outlaw Roadshow introduces Adam and Ryan’s favorite new bands coming to Bend: We Are Augustines, Kasey Anderson and the Honkies and Field Report which all received rave reviews at SXSW.
The Counting Crows recently released Underwater Sunshine (or what we did on our summer vacation), a CD of songs that the band loves. They want to bring these songs to new listeners, or present them in a new form for those who may already know and love them. Lead single Untitled (Love Song) will be recognized for the lyrics “Throw Your Arms Around My Neck”.
Tender Mercies is a feel good country rock band that includes Dan Vickrey and Jim Bogios both of Counting Crows along with bass player Kurt Stevenson (mandolin, slide guitar and fiddle) and Patrick Winningham (guitar and vocals).
Years before joining Counting Crows in 1993, Dan Vickrey met Patrick Winningham, the venue manager at the Hotel Utah in San Francisco. Patrick, a staple in San Francisco’s thriving music scene, introduced him to numerous musicians including Charlie Gillingham. On the Counting Crows first tour the band covered a few Tender Mercies songs such as Wiseblood, Four White Stallions, and Mercy to round out a set which, at the time, consisted only of the songs on August. Adam Duritz connected with the songs which still find their way into the Crows sets today.
Over a decade later, Dan hooked back up with Winningham and Kurt Stevenson playing shows now and again. In October 2011, Tender Mercies released a self titled album offering easy listening country rock songs mixed with bit of honky tonk swagger. Dan Vickrey was quoted, “I hope they stick in your head at least as long as they have stuck in mine!”
Kasey Anderson and the Honkies
Kasey Anderson and the Honkies serve up well-developed songs and sharp-edged, introspective lyrics to their alt-country, blues and roots rock music. The band is anchored by Kasey Anderson’s thoughtful-yet-edgy lyrics and guitarist Andrew McKeag’s (Presidents of the United States of America) musical acrobatics. The band also features bassist Eric Corson (The Long Winters) and drummer Mike Musburger (The Posies).
The Counting Crows have includes, Like Teenage Gravity, a Kasey Anderson original on their new album. The band’s new album Let the Bloody Moon Rise was released in June. Listen to songs from their upcoming album http://www.kaseyanderson.com/music.
The band Field Report creates a sparsely textured, slow-burning take on contemporary folk. Field Report is the creation of Chris Porterfield who has a wonderful rootsy twang in his voice. Field Report debuted at SxSW this spring to rave reviews.
Chris Porterfield was previously in DeYarmond Edison, which is best known as the former band of the members of Bon Iver, Megafaun and Field Report. Chris Porterfield hung back in Wisconsin and began writing his own songs that has since expanded to a full band. Listen to three songs on the upcoming album http://field-report.org/home/audio/.
